Bodie Island Lighthouse: A Must-Visit Landmark

The light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.

John 1:5

When we visit the Outer Banks of North Carolina, I enjoy a sunrise visit to one of my favorite lighthouses, Bodie Island Lighthouse. I often have the entire place to myself, with the exception of the resident deer who rudely ignore me and go about their morning routines. It is truly a peaceful way to explore.

Built in 1872, the Bodie Island Lighthouse is positioned on the Roanoke Sound  just south of Nags Head, a few miles before Oregon Inlet. The 214 steps that spiral to the top are open to the public, if climbing lighthouses is something you enjoy. The 170-foot structure is one of only a dozen remaining tall, brick tower lighthouses in the United States — and one of the few with an original first-order Fresnel lens to cast its light.  It’s light can be seen for 19 nautical miles and cycles 2.5 seconds on, 2.5 seconds off, 2.5 seconds on, and 22.5 seconds eclipse with 2 cycles each minute.  The lighthouse is marked with white & black bands and a black lantern house.

Consider a sunrise visit for yourself. It’s a great way to start the day!
