Top Local Eats in the Outer Banks: Breakfast at Orange Blossom Bakery & Cafe

Donuts are my love language.

My favorite part of travel is experiencing a place through its food.  That applies to new places we visit and those that we visit again and again.   Over the years, my husband and I have visited the Outer Banks of North Carolina many times and we have a list of favorite locally owned eateries that we like to plan our visits around when we are in town.  On a recent trip we found another one!

On a peaceful Sunday morning, we took a short drive from Rodanthe to Buxton where hoped to get a breakfast treat at the to Orange Blossom Bakery & Café.

Not sure what to expect, we found a busy parking lot, customers settling along the covered porch to enjoy their treats, and a line that had formed inside where order after order was quickly being filled.   When we arrived, we sat in the car for a moment and watched customer after customer come out of the café carrying boxes and bags of breakfast treats by the armfuls. I knew from experience that a busy restaurant with locals and visitors alike patiently standing in line meant that we were about to enjoy a yummy breakfast and we were not disappointed.

Sadly, we have never discovered the bakery during prior visits to Buxton because our trips have not centered around the breakfast hours. However, on this trip, we stayed close to Buxton and we came to town specifically on a recommendation.  It seems that the Orange Blossom Bakery & Café is a Buxton institution famously known for their “Apple Uglies.”   They also serve muffins, donuts, breakfast sandwiches, and my choice, cinnamon rolls with cream cheese icing.  YUM! Next time, I will try an Apple Ugly!  We enjoyed our breakfast on the porch of the bakery with our Miniature Schnauzer, Pepper and when we finished, we drove across the street to walk off our breakfast at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.  It was a great way to start our day!

My favorite part of travel is experiencing a place through its food.

For your trip to the Outer Banks, consider supporting the local community and the small businesses around you during your stay. If you plan to travel through or stay in or near Buxton, you will find the bakery just across the street from the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse.  You can find them at 47206 Highway 12, Buxton, North Carolina. The bakery is open seven days a week, 6:30-11am with hours varying around holidays.

Enjoy your breakfast and a sweet start to your day!
