Exploring Letchworth State Park: Nature’s Masterpiece

Water is powerful. It can wash away earth, put out fire, and even destroy iron. Water can carve its way through stone, and when trapped, water makes a new path.

Nestled in western upstate New York, Letchworth State Park is known as “The Grand Canyon of the East,” and the best state park in America.

At over 14,000 acres, and one mile wide by 17 miles long, the park is centered around a deep gorge carved by ancient glaciers and the Genesee River as it flows north. The deeply wooded park showcases three stunning waterfalls, with not-to-be-missed, stunning vistas around the Great Bend.

The park offers amenities such as camping, cabins, and other lodging, hiking and equestrian trails, fishing, picnic areas, pool facilities, visitors centers, and snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling in the winter months.

A state park worth visiting, Letchworth is at its most spectacular in the fall when fall color is at its peak.

Our visit to Letchworth was in early August in the middle of the week. Crowds were limited and we enjoyed spending the better part of the day exploring. The park is in a more remote area and we camped in the park’s campground. This gave us an opportunity to enjoy the park and all it had to offer.

Consider adding Letchworth State Park to your bucket list. I hope your visit is as stunning as ours!
