Some travelers get a little cranky between trips. But when wanderlust strikes and the next big vacation feels far away, what’s the cure?
One of the best ways to cope is to plan a simple weekend adventure.
Start by stealing an extra day here or there—take a Friday or a Monday (or both!) to extend the weekend and give yourself a little breathing room. Even one extra day can make a short trip feel like a true escape.

But where should you go? No matter where you live, there’s almost always something worth exploring within a few hours’ drive. Consider camping by a beautiful lake, booking a rental in a nearby town you’ve never explored (or one you love returning to), or stay close to home and splurge on a cozy hotel—especially one with a pool, hot tub, or spa services.
You could also hop in the car and drive until you reach a town in the next state, seek out a highly recommended hike, or head to the beach and let the sound of the ocean do its magic. In winter, a ski resort can be just as enjoyable for non-skiers as it is for those hitting the slopes. Better yet, find a cozy cabin, stock up on your favorite snacks, grab a great book, and settle in by a roaring fire.

When my husband and I start talking about getting away, I often find inspiration from fellow bloggers who share their adventures on Pinterest. It’s a great starting point, and the research often leads us to destinations, activities, or places to eat that we didn’t even know were options.
Once you’ve chosen your destination, pack a bag, fuel up the car, and hit the road. Treat your escape like a mini vacation—do everything you want to do, or nothing at all. A simple change of scenery and a little relaxation can be incredibly good for the soul.
After all, a memorable adventure doesn’t always require a plane ticket.
