When you’re getting ready to fly, it’s tempting to toss everything into your checked bag and call it a day. But some items should never leave your side when traveling. Lost, delayed, or diverted luggage happens more often than we like—and certain things are just too important to risk.
Here are four items you should always keep out of your checked luggage.
Prescription Medication
Never—ever—pack prescription medication in your checked bag.
If your luggage is delayed or lost, you could be left without medication that’s vital to your health. Always carry prescriptions in your personal item (like a purse, backpack, or small tote) so they stay with you at all times.
Bonus tip: keep medications in their original labeled containers to avoid issues during security checks.

Passports & Travel Documents
Passports, IDs, visas, boarding passes, and other travel documents should always be close at hand.
These items belong in your personal item, not a checked bag that could be rerouted or delayed. Having them easily accessible also makes airport security, boarding, and customs much smoother.
Irreplaceable Valuables, Clothing, or Jewelry
Traveling with expensive camera equipment, sentimental items, or special clothing (hello, destination weddings)? Don’t put them in checked luggage.
While it’s best to limit traveling with valuables when possible, if an item would devastate you if it went missing, it belongs in your carry-on. Keep valuables close and secure—either under the seat in front of you or locked in a carry-on stored in the overhead bin.

Laptops, Hand-Held Electronics & Lithium Batteries
Laptops, tablets, cameras, power banks, and other electronics should never go in checked luggage.
Not only are these items essential for most travelers, but lithium batteries are prohibited in checked bags due to their risk of overheating or catching fire. Always pack electronics and spare batteries in your carry-on.
A little planning goes a long way when flying. Keeping these items with you can save time, stress, and potentially a ruined trip.
Safe travels!
