How Not to Be THAT Camper

Camping has become a very popular family hobby, and while that’s a wonderful thing, it can sometimes mean much closer quarters with your neighbors than you’re used to at home. When campsites start to feel a little cozy, good camping manners matter more than ever.

So how do you enjoy the great outdoors and leave it just as beautiful for the campers who come after you?

These tips come from our own camping adventures—along with a few things we’ve… unfortunately… witnessed along the way.  (If you know, you know.)

Follow these simple tips and your camping trip will be great for everyone:

Leave no trace—better yet, leave it better than you found it.

Pick up your trash, friends. And let’s all agree right now: the fire ring is NOT a trash can. If it didn’t come from nature, it shouldn’t be left behind for someone else to pick up.

Follow the posted rules and guidelines.

They exist for a reason—and that reason is so we can all keep enjoying these beautiful places. Don’t spoil it for your future self or other campers.

One rule I see broken more than any other is how fast fellow campers drive or golf cart through the campground.  Slow down, we aren’t impressed.  Watch out for children playing, dogs, your fellow campers, or if you’re lucky, actual wildlife that can suddenly appear.

Be a good neighbor.

Camping isn’t a concert or a movie theater. Please don’t share your music with the whole campground, keep your outdoor TV and music to yourself, and avoid walking through your neighbor’s campsite like it’s a shortcut. Respect the campsite bubble.

Don’t bring in firewood from outside the area.

Transporting firewood can spread invasive insects and harmful diseases. To prevent from becoming patient zero, buy wood already cut from local wood in the campground.

In short: don’t be THAT camper. Camping is a community sport these days and sharing the campground with your neighbors with a little consideration and courtesy will be appreciated.

Enjoy the beauty of the place, be a good neighbor, and have a great trip!
