The Bodie Lighthouse

I can think of no other edifice constructed by man as altruistic as a lighthouse. They were built only to serve.

George Bernard Shaw

Built in 1872, the Bodie Island Lighthouse is positioned on Roanoke Sound just south of Nags Head, a few miles before Oregon Inlet on the North Carolina Outer Banks.  The 170-foot, 214-step structure is one of only a dozen remaining tall, brick tower lighthouses in the United States — and one of the few with an original first-order Fresnel lens to cast its light.  Its light can be seen for 19 nautical miles and cycles 2.5 seconds on, 2.5 seconds off, 2.5 seconds on, and 22.5 seconds eclipse with 2 cycles each minute.  The lighthouse is marked with white & black bands and a black lantern house.
