Tips, Pros & Cons of Vacation Rentals and Hotels

Constantly searching for views that take my breath away.

Unknown

When I was younger, staying in a hotel was a novelty and lots of fun, but just like many things that change as we grow up, hotel stays can often be less than magical.

I travel often for my full-time job as well as for leisure so over time, I have had many hotel experiences, both good and bad. Experience has taught me which hotels are best and which should be avoided. I have also found that the quality of some hotels, even within the same brand, can vary by location with some being very well maintained versus others that need a lot of TLC.

So what accommodations do I choose? Well, when I travel for work, I usually need to go with what my employer will pay for so that means a well-considered hotel. However, when my husband and I travel for fun, we opt for a vacation rental when we can.

Whether you stay in a hotel or choose a vacation rental, both options have pros and cons to consider. I hope my pros, cons, and tips from our experiences can help as you plan your next adventure.

Vacation rentals

Just like a hotel, vacation rentals can sometimes be hit or miss but generally, we have had great experiences in awesome locations. With options available to fit any need or preference, vacation rentals like Airbnb or Vrbo, among others, can be great alternatives when traveling.

To find the vacation rental that meets your needs, I would first recommend doing your research especially if you plan to travel to a new destination. Reputable rental resources in the area can be as simple as an online search.  Airbnb and Vrbo are great sources to search but depending on where you plan to vacation, other sources can include local rental companies as well. For example, in Key West, we have used rentals through Vrbo and a local property management company called Historic Hideaways.  When visiting the Outer Banks of North Carolina, we regularly rent through local rental management companies.

Pros of a vacation rental

In real estate, the top consideration is location, location, location and that is very true with vacation rentals. A beautiful spot on a lake, a great view of the sunrise or sunset over the ocean, or a prime home away from home on Key West can make for a stellar vacation. Rentals through Airbnb and Vrbo offer many diverse locations and experiences to consider with location, location, and location in mind.

Vacation rental locations can be varied and spots where a conventional hotel would not be found.

If a restful vacation is what you need, some vacation rentals can offer a more private, peaceful experience than a hotel.

Whether we travel to a remote mountaintop or the center of a bustling city if we opt for a vacation rental, we choose to cook some of our meals to keep food costs down as we travel. This is a big plus over a hotel stay.

Some Airbnb rentals are hosted by “Super hosts.” Super hosts are available throughout your rental from start to finish and can help you if you have questions about the property. They can also be very helpful if something arises during your stay. We have had great experiences with Super hosts and we highly recommend seeking rentals that are supported by a super host.

Cons of a vacation rental

Sometimes, cleaning fees can be excessive. Watch for those details in the rental description.

Some Airbnb or Vrbo rentals are one room in someone’s home instead of a whole house or condo. This might mean a little less privacy. Watch listings carefully if this is a concern or use filters as you search to help you to find the type of rental you prefer.

Some vacation rentals are well-appointed while others are bare-bones. Be sure to reach listings carefully if you are seeking specific amenities such as a pool or parking.

Hotels

Hotels can be more of a known factor when traveling. Generally, the traveler can have a set expectation of what a hotel rental will offer; a bed, a bathroom, and a TV at minimum. You might have amenities like a gym, pool, and perhaps even the offer of a “free” breakfast.

Hotels are also often conveniently located near airports, on an oceanfront, or close to attractions.

Pros of a hotel stay

Location, location, location: depending on your travel, it can be easy to find the hotel of your choice close to the attractions you want to visit.

Hotels are convenient for short stays.

If you use hotels regularly, download the hotel chain app onto your phone and join the loyalty program for your favorite hotel. The app can help you to make reservations, pick your room, check-in for your stay remotely, track your loyalty points, and act as a virtual room key if the hotel offers that option.

Cons of hotel stays

In our experience, hotel walls are very thin and it’s easy to hear your neighbors. That includes slamming doors, crying children, flushing toilets, and even your neighbor’s morning alarm!

Safety can sometimes be a concern. On traveler forums, reports are increasing regarding hotel rooms being double booked and some travelers finding another person already in their room. There are also concerns about the security of hotel door locks. This is a big concern for me and one of the reasons that I don’t travel alone.

Tips for renting a vacation property

Compare and contrast costs: if you are trying to decide between a hotel or a vacation rental, consider ALL costs that can help you with your decision. Hotels and vacation rentals list their lowest rental fees but don’t often clearly disclose taxes and fees. Are you traveling with a pet? Is parking included? Is there a shuttle that can help you to get around or do you need to rent a car?

As part of your research, read customer reviews: we always consider reviews from previous travelers, both positive and negative. If there are negative reviews, we try to understand the situation described and whether the traveler is being genuine or blowing the situation out of proportion. Remember that there are always two sides to a story. Reviews can be helpful so I read them and leave one to help others behind me.

Plan early: As you plan, consider the time of year and the location you are hoping to visit. Depending on the timing of your visit, rentals of all kinds can be in high demand and sold out.

Read rental details carefully: does your rental allow you to bring a pet and if so, what fees are involved? Does your rental offer parking? What kitchen amenities are offered in a vacation rental? Does the property offer access to a pool or gym? What attractions are close by? Don’t forget to consider taxes and any additional fees that are associated with a hotel or vacation rental.

Regardless of where you plan to travel, there are likely to be great options for your stay. Do your research, choose wisely, and you will have a trip of a lifetime!
