What Every First-Time Cruiser Should Know – Part 3: On board and In Port Fun

Every major cruise line has a lot in common—but depending on your itinerary, there are so many fun experiences waiting for you once your trip gets underway.

You can lounge by the pool, find a quiet corner with a good book, or jump into as many onboard activities as possible. There’s no “right” way to cruise!

Honestly? You paid for this vacation—so you get to decide what fun looks like for you.

What’s Going On Each Day?

As your cruise begins, you’ll quickly notice there’s always something happening. Each day, you’ll get a schedule of onboard activities—usually delivered to your cabin the night before.

Many cruise lines also make the daily schedule available on your cabin TV or through their app, which makes it easy to check plans on the go.

You can stay as busy as you want… or completely ignore the schedule and take a nap by the pool. No judgment here. Make each day your own.

Onboard Activities to Explore

Cruise ships are packed with things to do, whether you’re looking to stay active or completely relax.

Some favorites to consider:

  • Early morning walks on the open deck (and sunrise views if you’re up for it!)
  • Fitness classes or a visit to the gym
  • Poolside fun, water slides, or just soaking in the hot tub
  • Activities like mini golf, basketball, pickleball, rock climbing, or even ice skating on select ships
  • Bingo, trivia, and game competitions
  • Wine tastings, cooking demos, and afternoon tea
  • Craft workshops or guest lectures
  • Live music by the pool or around the ship
  • Spa treatments (if you’re in full relaxation mode)

And of course… there’s always a lounge chair with your name on it if doing nothing sounds perfect.

Let’s Talk About Food

One thing is for sure,  you definitely won’t go hungry on your cruise.

Most ships offer:

  • Large buffets with a wide variety of options
  • Main dining rooms serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner
  • Specialty restaurants (these usually come with an extra charge, but can be worth it for a special night)
  • Room service (sometimes included, sometimes an extra fee depending on the cruise line)

Pro tip: Try a little bit of everything—you’re on vacation after all. I love to indulge in a Crème Brûlée or Tiramisu when cruising!

Nighttime Fun

When the sun goes down, the ship doesn’t slow down—it just shifts gears.

Evenings can include:

  • On-deck movie nights
  • Deck parties and live music
  • Silent discos
  • Theme nights and formal nights
  • Comedy shows and piano bars
  • Karaoke
  • Broadway-style productions
  • Or simply stargazing on deck

You can dress up, dress down, go out, or call it an early night—it’s completely up to you.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

Before you fill your schedule, there are a couple of helpful tips:

  • Some activities, dining, and experiences come with extra charges
  • Popular shows, dining times, and excursions can book up quickly—so it’s smart to make reservations early when possible

A little planning here can make a big difference later in your trip.

Getting Off the Ship in Port

Ahh… port day! This is often what you’ve been looking forward to most and why you chose your cruise.

Before you head off the ship, take a minute to make sure you’re ready:

  • Bring your key card and a photo ID
  • In some ports, carrying your passport is a good idea
  • Pack a small day bag with anything you’ll need
  • If you’ve booked an excursion, don’t forget your tickets

A little preparation makes for a much smoother day exploring.

Ship-Sponsored Excursions

Cruise line excursions are organized  trips that can last a few hours to all day.  These are adventures contracted by the cruise line with trusted local vendors.

One major perk? If there’s a delay during your excursion, the ship will wait for you—because you booked through them.

For many first-time cruisers, this added peace of mind is worth it.

It is likely that the most popular excursions fill quickly so consider booking your excursions on line while you plan for your trip.  You can book excursions once you are on the ship but you could find the excursion you want is sold out.

Exploring on Your Own

You don’t have to book through the cruise line. Plenty of travelers choose to explore ports on their own—and it can be a great way to experience a destination more freely.

Other options include:

  • Booking tours in advance through companies like Viator
  • Hiring local taxis or guides at the port
  • Simply walking around and exploring at your own pace

Just keep this in mind: if you’re exploring independently and something delays you, the ship is not required to wait.

Safety & Timing Matter

No matter how you choose to explore, be aware of your surroundings and make smart choices while in port.

And most importantly—pay attention to the “all aboard” time. This is the time you must be back on the ship, not the time you should be arriving at the port.

Give yourself a buffer and plan to return early. It’s always better to be relaxing onboard than running down the pier.

Final Thoughts

Cruise life is what you make it. Whether you pack your days full of activities or take things slow and easy, there’s no wrong way to enjoy your time at sea.

Mix in a little adventure, a little relaxation, and a lot of good food—and you’ve got the recipe for an unforgettable trip.
